Where Does NeoChat Store Accounts and Settings on Linux?
NeoChat keeps config in ~/.config with local sync data under ~/.local/share, plus secrets in the wallet.
Last updated
NeoChat splits KDE style config from Matrix sync state. Settings live under ~/.config (the neochatrc area), while room data and media cache sit under ~/.local/share. Encryption secrets stay in KWallet, not in either tree.
Exact filenames shifted across NeoChat releases, so copy both trees whole. Flatpak and native builds keep separate trees, so check the sandboxed paths first when the plain home folders look empty. Flatpak builds mirror them under ~/.var/app/org.kde.neochat. Expect device re-verification after moving without the wallet.
Where NeoChat stores this, by platform
~/.config (NeoChat settings)
Account list and preferences. Flatpak equivalent is ~/.var/app/org.kde.neochat/config. Copy with NeoChat closed.
~/.local/share (NeoChat sync data)
Room database plus media cache. Flatpak mirrors under the same app id data folder. Secrets come from KWallet separately.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move NeoChat to a new install?
Copy both config and data trees, migrate KWallet, then launch and verify the session. Encrypted rooms need the wallet entry or they start over.
Where are NeoChat encryption keys?
In KWallet under the NeoChat entries. Back up the wallet too. Files alone restore rooms but not trusted device state.
