Where Is the Gammastep Config File?

Gammastep reads config.ini from the gammastep folder under the XDG config home. Scripts in hooks run on temperature events.

Last updated

Gammastep adjusts screen color by time of day, and one optional file drives it. The config named config.ini lives in a gammastep folder under the XDG config home, usually home config. No file is required. Flags alone work fine.

The INI format splits general options from provider sections. Location goes under manual with latitude and longitude, while the general section picks the adjustment method and temperatures. Event scripts live in a hooks subfolder beside the config. A system sample config documents every key.

Where Gammastep stores this, by platform

Linux
/home/<username>/.config/gammastep/config.ini

Main config in standard INI format. Copy the sample from etc or upstream, then set lat and lon under the manual section.

Linux
/home/<username>/.config/gammastep/hooks

Event scripts run on period changes. The event name arrives as the first script argument.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set my location manually?

Create the folder and file, then restart gammastep. The man page documents every key. Start from the sample config shipped in etc or the upstream repo.

How do I run a script at sunset?

Drop executables into the hooks folder. They run on events like period changes, with the event name passed as the first argument.
