Where Is the Redshift Config File?

Redshift reads redshift.conf from ~/.config on Linux, with location and temperature curves inside.

Last updated

Redshift centers on one file at ~/.config/redshift.conf holding location, day and night temperatures, and transition timing. The tray applet writes the same file its daemon reads, so GUI and hand edits mix.

Back up the single file to migrate warmth prefs. Geoclue can supply location instead of manual coordinates. Wayland sessions often need the companion compositor support enabled first.

Where Redshift stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/redshift.conf

Location plus temperature curves. XDG_CONFIG_HOME override moves the parent. Restart the daemon after edits for curves to apply.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set Redshift location manually?

Put latitude and longitude in redshift.conf location section. Disable the geoclue provider there too. Restart to lock the coordinates in.

Why is Redshift inactive on Wayland?

The compositor must expose gamma control. Enable its night light protocol support first. Config stays valid while waiting on the compositor.
