Where Does Ghidra Store Projects?

Ghidra's user-chosen project directories, recent list prefs, and shared repo model.

Last updated

Ghidra never picks a project location for you. Every project lives in a directory you choose at creation, with versions managed locally inside it unless you attach a shared Ghidra Server repository.

The app only remembers where you pointed it. Recent paths, import and export directories persist as preferences, so a lost project usually means a forgotten folder rather than deleted data.

Where Ghidra stores this, by platform

Windows
[ChosenDir]\[ProjectName]

Directory selected in the new project wizard. Defaults suggest a ghidra_projects style folder. Recent list and LAST_NEW_PROJECT_DIRECTORY live in app preferences.

macOS
[ChosenDir]/[ProjectName]

Same model. Checkouts in shared repos materialize as local files below the project dir. Deleting the directory deletes the non-shared project.

Linux
[ChosenDir]/[ProjectName]

Same model. Headless analyzers take the path as an argument, so scripts hardcode whatever directory the team agreed on.

Frequently asked questions

Ghidra forgot my project. Where is it?

Wherever you created it. Search the disk for the project name directory. The recent list only stores pointers, so a moved folder simply drops off the list.

Local project versus shared repository?

Local keeps every version in the project directory. Shared keeps master copies on the Ghidra Server with local checkouts, so back up the server side instead.
