Where Does GitButler Store Project Data?

GitButler keeps global config in OS app data folders, with per repo virtual branch state inside each .git directory.

Last updated

GitButler splits state in two. Global keys, project list, and settings live in OS app data (a com.gitbutler.app folder). Per repo virtual branches, snapshots, and change logs live inside that repo under .git gitbutler. Delete a clone and its Butler state goes with it.

Logs sit in OS log directories for crash triage. Override per repo storage with git config gitbutler.storagePath when network drives choke on SQLite. That keeps metadata on fast local disks while code stays remote.

Where GitButler stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\com.gitbutler.app

Holds projects.json and settings.json plus keys. Per repo state in [repo]\.git\gitbutler. Logs in %LOCALAPPDATA%\com.gitbutler.app\logs.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/com.gitbutler.app

Same interior as Windows. Logs in ~/Library/Logs/com.gitbutler.app. Per repo state beside code in .git gitbutler.

Linux
~/.local/share/gitbutler-tauri

Same model as other platforms. Use git config global gitbutler.storagePath to redirect all repos to one base dir on flaky filesystems.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset GitButler without losing code?

Close the app, back up then clear the app data folder above, and reopen to re add repos. Working trees stay untouched since Butler state besides .git gitbutler is separate from files.

Where are GitButler logs for bug reports?

In the OS log paths above (Tauri standard locations). Attach the recent log plus the per repo .git gitbutler snapshot when filing issues.
