Where Does Glowforge Store Designs and Files?

Where Glowforge keeps designs and why most of your full library lives in the cloud account, not on disk.

Last updated

Glowforge is cloud first. Designs, catalog items, and past prints live in your Glowforge account library. The computer holds only source files you made elsewhere and exports you downloaded. There is no local library database to copy between machines in the usual sense.

That makes backup simple and migration tricky. Simple because signing in restores the library. Tricky because moving to a different account needs manual export and import per design. Keep master SVGs in Documents with version names. Relying only on the cloud library leaves you stuck if a design is ever removed or an account lapses.

Where Glowforge stores this, by platform

Windows
%userprofile%\Documents (masters, library is cloud)

Library and print history live in your Glowforge cloud account. Local masters are wherever you saved uploads, often Documents. Export SVGs before switching accounts.

macOS
~/Documents (masters, library is cloud)

Same cloud library in the browser. Local files sit wherever downloads land, usually ~/Downloads or ~/Documents. Clear browser cache without fear, since the library syncs back on sign in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Glowforge designs to another account?

Export SVGs and PDFs from the dashboard to local files before leaving. The cloud library does not transfer between accounts. On the new account import the exported files. Settings like material presets must be recreated by hand.

Are Glowforge files stored locally or in the cloud?

Mostly cloud. The dashboard library, catalog purchases, and print settings sync to your Glowforge login. The browser cache holds temporary previews. Local files are only the SVGs and PDFs you uploaded or exported yourself, wherever you saved them.
