Where Does Silhouette Studio Store Its Library?

Where Silhouette Studio keeps its library database on Windows and Mac, and how to back it up properly.

Last updated

Silhouette Studio keeps designs in a library database, not as loose files you can browse. The database lives under ProgramData style paths on Windows and under Application Support on Mac, in folders named com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio. Local and cloud sections share the same viewer but different storage.

The safe backup is Library Export from inside the app. Copying the raw database folder works for full migration, but the files inside are not individually openable. Export user created files if you want SVGs and STUDIO files you can open elsewhere. Do this before a clean reinstall, since the uninstall wipes those system folders.

Where Silhouette Studio stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\ProgramData\com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio

Library database and license folders live here. Back up via Library Export inside the app rather than copying this folder by hand, unless migrating the whole machine.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio

Library data sits under both /Library/Application Support and ~/Library/Application Support in com.aspexsoftware folders. Preferences are in ~/Library/Preferences. Export from the Library pane before deleting anything.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move my Silhouette library to a new computer?

Open the Library, click your name, and pick Library Export for a full backup or Export User Created Files for portable copies. Store the export outside the app folders, ideally on an external drive. Reimport through Library Import on the new machine.

What is the difference between local and cloud library files?

Cloud files show a green check and sync between machines. Local files show a gray X and live only on that computer. Toggle the icon to move a design. Do not use the library as your only storage, since cloud space is limited and local files die with the drive.
