Where Are Risen Save Files Located?
Risen saves moved between editions: old builds use Saved Games\Risen, the 2023 edition uses AppData\Local\Risen.
Last updated
Risen changed its save folder with the 2023 gamepad edition. Old builds read Saved Games, the new edition reads AppData Local, and the updater moves files between them on launch. Saves that seem lost are usually sitting in the other folder.
The two editions cannot share one folder. The old build breaks if a SaveGames directory exists under AppData, and the new one ignores Saved Games. Pick an edition, put the folder in its place, and keep a backup before switching.
Where Risen stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Risen\SaveGames
Original edition location. The 2023 update migrates these to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Risen\SaveGames on first launch. Keep SaveGames in exactly one of the two places or the old build cannot save.
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Risen\SaveGames
2023 gamepad edition location. To continue old runs here, copy the SaveGames folder over manually. A directory symlink between the two lets both editions share one physical folder.
Frequently asked questions
my risen saves vanished after the 2023 update
Check both folders: Saved Games\Risen\SaveGames and AppData\Local\Risen\SaveGames. The updater moves files to the new path automatically, and copying them across manually finishes the job.
can old and new risen share the same saves
With a symlink, yes. Link %LOCALAPPDATA%\Risen\SaveGames to the Saved Games copy with mklink /D. Use distinct save names per edition so they never overwrite each other.
