Where Does grimblast Save Screenshots?

grimblast saves into DEFAULT_TARGET_DIR, else XDG_SCREENSHOTS_DIR, else Pictures, else home. No config file involved.

Last updated

grimblast wraps grim, slurp and jq for Hyprland with copy/save/copysave/edit actions and no configuration file. Where save lands follows one chain: DEFAULT_TARGET_DIR, then XDG_SCREENSHOTS_DIR (or user-dirs.dirs), then XDG_PICTURES_DIR, then HOME.

Most surprises come from that chain, not from bugs. A set screenshots dir in user-dirs.dirs quietly reroutes everything away from Pictures, which is worth checking before blaming the keybind.

Where grimblast stores this, by platform

Linux
$DEFAULT_TARGET_DIR (else $XDG_SCREENSHOTS_DIR, else Pictures, else ~)

Pass an explicit FILE to skip the chain entirely, or - for stdout. Edit staging uses /tmp (DEFAULT_TMP_EDITOR_DIR). Needs HYPRLAND_INSTANCE_SIGNATURE, so it only runs inside Hyprland.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change where grimblast saves?

Export DEFAULT_TARGET_DIR to the folder you want before calling grimblast. It beats every fallback and keeps distro scripts from scattering shots across Pictures.

Does grimblast do more than save to a file?

Yes: copy, copysave and edit. save writes the file, copy skips it for clipboard-only, edit opens the result in an image editor (gimp by default).
