Where Is the Hyprland Config File?
Hyprland's hyprland.conf path, how to point at another file, and where split configs live.
Last updated
Hyprland reads a single entry file at ~/.config/hypr/hyprland.conf, or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/hypr/hyprland.conf if you moved XDG_CONFIG_HOME. On first launch it writes an autogenerated example there so you have something concrete to edit.
The file reloads the moment you save, which makes trial and error fast. Larger setups source extra files for binds, monitors and window rules from the same hypr directory.
Where Hyprland stores this, by platform
~/.config/hypr/hyprland.conf
Override per launch with hyprland --config /path/to/file or -c. Remove the autogenerated=1 line to silence the first run warning. HyDE and similar distros add source lines for keybindings.conf and monitors.conf beside it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reload Hyprland config without logging out?
Just save the file. Hyprland watches it and applies changes live. If you want it explicit, run hyprctl reload from any terminal inside the session.
Can I split my Hyprland config across files?
Yes. Add source = ~/.config/hypr/monitors.conf style lines to hyprland.conf. Paths resolve relative to the parent config, and each file can only be included once.
