Where Does EasyBCD Store Its Files?
EasyBCD keeps its own settings cache, BCD backups and NeoGrub profiles apart from the Windows BCD store.
Last updated
EasyBCD does not own the Windows boot store. The live BCD hive belongs to Windows at EFI/Microsoft/Boot/BCD on UEFI or C:/Boot/BCD on legacy BIOS, edited safely through bcdedit. This post covers EasyBCD's own files around that store.
The app installs to Program Files as a portable-capable .NET program. Its settings cache sits in LocalAppData, BCD backups default to Documents with dated filenames, and NeoGrub profiles live in an NST folder on the boot partition. Back up the whole set before editing boot entries.
Where EasyBCD stores this, by platform
C:\Program Files (x86)\NeoSmart Technologies\EasyBCD
Install folder; the app also runs portably from a copied folder. Settings cache in %LOCALAPPDATA%\NeoSmart Technologies. BCD backups default to ~/Documents/EasyBCD Backup (date).bcd. NeoGrub profiles in C:\NST\menu.lst on the boot partition.
Frequently asked questions
Where are EasyBCD backups saved?
To dated .bcd files defaulting in Documents, named EasyBCD Backup with the date. The app auto-backs up on first run. Set Tools, Options to reuse one backup directory, and retype the path when the dialog defaults into OneDrive Documents.
How do I edit boot entries safely?
Use EasyBCD or bcdedit, never a hex editor on the hive. Export a backup first with bcdedit export or the EasyBCD backup flow. The live mirror under HKLM BCD00000 is read-only insight, not an edit surface.
What is the NST folder for?
NeoGrub profiles: menu.lst plus MBR helpers used for custom GRUB-style entries. It follows the boot partition, so check System Reserved when C:/NST is absent. Copy it with BCD backups for a restorable boot setup.
