Where Is the Halloy Config File?
Halloy TOML config and logs on every OS, and the obsolete YAML name to stop searching for.
Last updated
Halloy keeps servers, themes and keys in config.toml: %APPDATA%\halloy on Windows, ~/.config/halloy on Linux, with Mac checking Application Support and XDG in recent builds. First launch creates it; Ctrl+, (Cmd+, on Mac) opens it directly.
Stop looking for halloy.yaml: the format moved from YAML to TOML and old guides never updated. Relative paths inside resolve against the config dir, and parking a config next to the exe forces portable mode with all data local. Logs rotate beside it (4 files by default) with optional IRC protocol logs.
Where Halloy stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\halloy\config.toml
Main TOML config, auto created on first launch. Rotating logs in the logs/ sibling (halloy.<date>.log). Config next to the exe enables portable mode with all data local.
~/.config/halloy/config.toml
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME respected. Logs and history under ~/.local/share/halloy. Flatpak builds nest under ~/.var/app/org.squidowl.halloy. Relative config paths resolve against this dir.
~/Library/Application Support/halloy/config.toml
Recent builds prefer $HOME/.config/halloy instead; both are checked, so move the whole directory to consolidate. Cmd+, opens whichever is live.
Frequently asked questions
Halloy ignores my config.yaml edits. Why?
The format is TOML now (config.toml), and YAML names are obsolete. Migrate settings into config.toml and open it from inside the app to confirm the live file.
How do I run portable Halloy from USB?
Place config.toml next to the executable. That alone pins all data beside the exe, so the stick carries servers, themes and logs together.
