Where Are Hotline Miami Save Files Located?

Where Hotline Miami keeps SaveData and config on Windows, Mac and Linux, and how to move saves across.

Last updated

Hotline Miami keeps one save file plus one config file in the user location for each OS. Windows uses Documents My Games. Mac uses Application Support. Linux uses the XDG data home.

The format crosses platforms cleanly, which makes manual moves trivial. Steam Cloud covers same machine reinstalls but is not cross platform, so copy the file yourself between systems. Old install folder saves belong to retired builds and need moving forward. The sav file is tiny, so mailing it to yourself works fine as an offsite backup.

Where Hotline Miami stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\HotlineMiami\SaveData.sav

Single SaveData file plus config in one folder. Identical format on all three OSes. Copy the sav file between OS folders for moves.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Hotline Miami/SaveData.sav

Same save and config under Application Support. Note the space in Hotline Miami here versus none on Windows and Linux. Catalina and later need the 64 bit build.

Linux
~/.local/share/HotlineMiami/SaveData.sav

Same save and config under the XDG data home. Copy the sav file between OS folders for cross platform moves. Fully XDG compliant.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move a Hotline Miami save between PC and Mac?

Copy SaveData.sav into the matching folder for the target OS from this post. The format is identical everywhere, only the parent path changes. Keep the config file behind since key bindings differ per setup anyway.

My old Hotline Miami save sits in the install folder. Is it usable?

Very early builds wrote saves next to the game exe, which updates abandoned. The current builds read the user folder paths in this post. Move any stray sav file forward rather than launching the old exe to convert it.
