Where Does HTTPie Store Config and Sessions?

HTTPie CLI config file and session folders on Linux, macOS, and Windows for auth and default settings.

Last updated

HTTPie CLI keeps config and sessions under one root. Linux and macOS use ~/.config/httpie with config.json for defaults. Sessions sit in sessions subfolders named by host and port. That tree is the part to back up.

Windows follows the same layout under %APPDATA%\httpie. Desktop app collections live separately in Electron user data. CLI sessions are plain JSON files you can copy freely. Keep auth files private since they hold tokens. Sessions copy cleanly between machines. Named sessions keep per host credentials apart.

Where HTTPie stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/httpie/config.json

Defaults for style, timeouts, and output options. Edit by hand or with httpie options. Keep with sessions when migrating machines.

Linux
~/.config/httpie/sessions

Per host cookies and auth in JSON files. One subfolder per host and port. Copy whole tree to preserve logins.

Windows
%APPDATA%\httpie\config.json

Same config and sessions layout as Linux. Desktop collections live in a separate Electron folder. CLI files stay plain JSON.

Frequently asked questions

where is the HTTPie config file

Open ~/.config/httpie/config.json to set default options and styles. Sessions for named hosts live in ~/.config/httpie/sessions. The config file is small and safe to version.

how do i move HTTPie sessions to a new machine

Copy the sessions folder with the config file. Sessions hold cookies and auth per host. The config holds defaults. Both travel well between machines. Keep tokens private.
