Where Does Hugin Store Preferences?

Hugin stores preferences in the Windows registry, a Preferences file on Mac, and a dotfile on Linux.

Last updated

Hugin has no single config file across systems. Windows users get registry keys, Mac users get a Preferences file, and Linux users get a dotfile in home. The practical upshot is the same: quit Hugin, rename the thing, relaunch, and you are back to defaults.

Your actual panoramas are .pto project files wherever you saved them, plus the source photos. Preferences only cover tool paths, assistant defaults, and interface tweaks, so resetting them never touches a project.

Where Hugin stores this, by platform

Windows
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\hugin

Registry keys, not files. Back up by exporting the key in regedit before editing. Custom assistant scripts live separately under %APPDATA%\hugin.

macOS
~/Library/Preferences/hugin Preferences

A single file despite the space in its name. Use Go > Go to Folder in Finder and paste ~/Library/Preferences to reach it. Rename it with Hugin closed to reset.

Linux
~/.hugin

Hidden file in your home directory. Rename it from a terminal or a file manager showing hidden files, then relaunch Hugin for fresh defaults.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset Hugin to default settings?

Quit Hugin first, then rename or delete the preferences in the location above for your system. On relaunch Hugin writes a fresh set. Your .pto projects and photos are untouched, since those live wherever you saved them.

Where do I put custom Hugin assistant scripts?

On Windows they go under %APPDATA%\hugin so Hugin reads them at startup. Quit Hugin before adding scripts, then relaunch to see them in the assistant menu. The exact folder is also shown in Hugin's Preferences, since it can be changed.
