Where Is the Inscryption Save File Located?

Inscryption hides its real save in the Steam game folder itself, while the AppData folder holds only logs.

Last updated

Inscryption breaks the Unity convention on purpose, or at least by design. The save file sits beside the game executable in the Steam install folder, not in AppData. Guides pointing at LocalLow send hunters to a folder containing only logs.

The file is SaveFile.gwsave and there is exactly one of it. Verifying game files can overwrite it, which makes a manual copy the only safety net before repairs. Uninstalling removes the game folder and the save with it, unlike well behaved AppData games.

Where Inscryption stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Inscryption\SaveFile.gwsave

SaveFile.gwsave is the entire run. Copy it before verifying files or uninstalling, since both operations target this folder.

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Daniel Mullins Games\Inscryption

Player.log lives here for crash reports. No progress hides in this folder despite what generic guides claim.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up my run?

Right click Inscryption in Steam, Manage, Browse Local Files, and copy SaveFile.gwsave. Restoring means dropping it back into a fresh install's folder. The file carries the whole run including secrets state.

Is the LocalLow folder good for anything?

Yes for reading logs: Player.log in the LocalLow folder records crashes and errors for bug reports to the developer. It holds no progress, so deleting it fixes nothing but reporting needs it.
