Where Does InvokeAI Store Models and Images?
InvokeAI keeps models, outputs, and its database in a root directory holding invokeai.yaml, defaulting to home invokeai.
Last updated
InvokeAI revolves around one root directory. Models, generated images, the database, and invokeai.yaml all live there. The search order is CLI root flag, then INVOKEAI_ROOT, then the active virtualenv folder, then home invokeai. Knowing that order ends most lost model hunts.
Tune the install by editing invokeai.yaml (models_dir for external drives is the classic move) or by env vars, which beat file values. Config flags cover a subset. Keep root backups whole: models plus outputs plus yaml restore a working studio.
Where InvokeAI stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[Username]\invokeai
Override with the root flag or INVOKEAI_ROOT. Point models_dir at an external drive in invokeai.yaml to spare C. Launch the WebUI pointing at your chosen tree.
~/invokeai
Same root model on Mac and Linux. The config flag picks an alternate yaml path. Docker and venv layouts still resolve to one root holding models, databases, and outputs.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move InvokeAI models to another drive?
Set models_dir in invokeai.yaml to the new location and restart. Copy existing model files across first so the manager sees them without redownloading.
Where are InvokeAI generations saved?
In the outputs area inside the active root directory. Board and gallery organization lives in the database beside them, so back up the root together.
