Where Does Jellyfin Media Player Store Settings?
Jellyfin desktop client profiles, config and MPV settings per OS.
Last updated
Jellyfin Media Player (the desktop client, not the server) stores per profile folders with jellyfin-desktop.conf, logs and cache, plus an optional mpv.conf for the MPV backend. Media itself always stays on the server.
Server connection details, users and playback preferences live per profile id, so multi user machines keep separate folders. Tweaking MPV goes in the mpv config directory the client opens from its own settings. Reinstalling the client loses local preferences only; libraries rebuild from the server instantly.
Where Jellyfin Media Player stores this, by platform
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Jellyfin Desktop\profiles\<profile-id>
Config, cache and logs per profile with jellyfin-desktop.conf inside. MPV tweaks go in %APPDATA%\jellyfin-desktop\mpv. Back up the profile folder with the client closed.
~/Library/Application Support/Jellyfin Desktop/profiles/<profile-id>
Same per profile layout with cache under ~/Library/Caches and logs under ~/Library/Logs. MPV config at ~/.config/jellyfin-desktop/mpv, openable from client settings.
~/.local/share/jellyfin-desktop/profiles/<profile-id>
Cache under ~/.cache/jellyfin-desktop with the same profile ids. Flatpak builds nest under ~/.var/app/org.jellyfin.JellyfinDesktop. Copy profiles between machines with matching client versions.
Frequently asked questions
how do I use custom MPV settings in Jellyfin Media Player
Create mpv.conf in the mpv config directory for your OS (open it from client settings) with standard mpv options. Restart the client. Most playback and shader options apply; input mapping has exceptions.
where did my Jellyfin server go after reinstalling the client
Nowhere: servers and media live on the Jellyfin host. Re-add the server URL in the fresh client and sign in. Per profile preferences are the only thing to rebuild.
