Where Does KakaoTalk Store Chat Data on PC?

KakaoTalk for Windows keeps chat databases and attachments in a Kakao folder under AppData Local, one hashed folder per account.

Last updated

KakaoTalk's PC client stores everything under one Local folder. Each logged in account gets a hashed users subfolder holding chat databases, contacts, and cached attachments. The names mean nothing to humans, which is normal.

The databases are ESE format, the same engine behind old Exchange stores, and only the client reads them. Kakao's intended path is its own chat backup to the cloud, restored after reinstall with phone verification. Folder copies are a fallback for the paranoid, not a replacement.

Where KakaoTalk stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Kakao\KakaoTalk\users

Each hashed subfolder is one account with chat_data databases inside. The files only open in KakaoTalk itself, so pair any copy with the official in app backup.

Frequently asked questions

Can I read the chat files directly?

No. The chat files are ESE databases readable only by the app, so copying them buys nothing without a working login. Use Settings > Chats > Back Up Chat Data and keep its password somewhere safe.

How do I move chats to a new PC?

Copying the users folder preserves the local data, but KakaoTalk still demands verification on a new machine and its official backup expires after a limited window. Run the official backup, then treat the folder copy as a spare.
