Where Does Karakeep Store Bookmarks and Assets?

Karakeep stores its SQLite DB and assets under DATA_DIR (/data in Docker), with search in a Meilisearch volume.

Last updated

Karakeep funnels persistence through one variable. DATA_DIR defaults to /data in Docker and holds the SQLite database plus crawled assets. Meilisearch keeps its own index in a second volume.

The compose file already wires both volumes, so check its volumes section for your host paths. Back up the data volume on a schedule. The search index can reindex from the database if it ever goes missing.

Where Karakeep stores this, by platform

Linux
/data (DATA_DIR inside container)

Container-side persistent dir with the SQLite DB and assets subfolder. Bind a host folder here. Never change the variable without moving the volume too.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Karakeep?

Back up the DATA_DIR volume for the database and assets, plus the Meilisearch volume for the search index. The index rebuilds from the app if lost, so DATA_DIR is the critical one.

Can Karakeep assets live on separate storage?

Set ASSETS_DIR to another path. It defaults to DATA_DIR/assets. Useful when screenshots and crawled pages outgrow the main volume.

Does Karakeep support S3 asset storage?

Yes for object storage. Set an S3 endpoint and Karakeep stores assets there instead of local disk. The database still needs its own backup.
