Where Are macOS Kernel Extensions Stored?
Legacy kernel extensions live in Library Extensions folders, blocked by default on Apple Silicon.
Last updated
Kernel extensions are the old driver model, living in Extensions folders under Library and inside the system itself. Apple Silicon Macs refuse them without reduced security mode and per-extension approval.
The folders still exist because legacy software and upgrades leave copies behind. Nothing modern needs them; vendors migrated to system extensions years ago. Audit these folders when old drivers misbehave, and remove what no app claims.

Legacy third-party kernel extensions. Blocked by default on Apple Silicon; migrate vendors to system extensions instead of approving these.
Frequently asked questions
Should I approve a kernel extension prompt?
Nothing current should. Apple Silicon requires reduced security plus explicit approval per extension, and most vendors moved to system extensions instead. Treat new kext prompts as suspicious.
