Where Are macOS System Extensions Stored?

Third-party system extensions live in Library SystemExtensions folders, managed by the OS per team.

Last updated

System extensions replaced kernel extensions for drivers, endpoint security, and network filters. Each vendor's extension lives in a SystemExtensions folder under Library, organized by developer team.

Both the system and local libraries can hold them, which splits cleanup duty. Uninstallers should remove their own, but orphans accumulate from dead apps. System Settings lists what is loaded; these folders show what is merely present.

Third-party system, driver, and security extensions per vendor team. Remove via the owning app first; orphans here explain phantom kext-like behavior.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove a leftover system extension?

Remove the app that installed it, then check both libraries. Orphaned extensions linger after sloppy uninstalls, and the folders show exactly what remains.
