Where Is the Klipper printer.cfg File?
Klipper printer.cfg paths for Moonraker data installs and legacy layouts, plus where logs and backups sit.
Last updated
Klipper reads its config from printer.cfg, but the folder depends on install age. Modern Moonraker installs use ~/printer_data/config/printer.cfg. Older installs use ~/klipper_config/printer.cfg. Both paths appear in guides, which confuses newcomers.
Logs and extras sit nearby. Klippy logs land in /tmp or ~/printer_data/logs, and UI backups pile up beside the config. Edit through Mainsail or Fluidd when possible for safety. Those frontends validate and keep automatic backups that hand editing skips.
Where Klipper stores this, by platform
~/printer_data/config/printer.cfg
Current default with Moonraker. Mainsail and Fluidd edit this file through the Machine panel. Logs for the same install sit in ~/printer_data/logs.
~/klipper_config/printer.cfg
Pre Moonraker data path still found on older images. Check here when printer_data is empty. Migrate by moving files with Klipper and Moonraker stopped.
Frequently asked questions
which printer.cfg is actually active
Look in ~/printer_data/config first, then ~/klipper_config as fallback. Moonraker installs since 2022 use printer_data, older guides use klipper_config. The active file is the one Moonraker shows in Machine settings.
does the web UI keep backups of printer.cfg
Yes. Mainsail and Fluidd write .autosave and backup files beside printer.cfg on every save through the UI. Keep a dated copy before pasting community configs. A bad edit only needs the old file restored.
