Where Does Kubo Store IPFS Repo and Config?
Kubo keeps the IPFS repo with config and blocks in ~/.ipfs on every desktop OS release.
Last updated
Kubo centers on the IPFS_PATH repo, defaulting to ~/.ipfs: config file with identity and gateways, datastore blocks, and keystore keys. Desktop and server installs share the layout across Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Back up config plus keystore for identity moves. Blocks rebuild from the network, so skip the datastore when space matters. Never share private keys from the keystore folder.
Where Kubo stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[You]\.ipfs
Config plus blocks and keystore. IPFS_PATH override moves it anywhere. Back up config and keys, skip blocks.
~/.ipfs
Same repo layout. Desktop app wraps the same Kubo paths. Keep permissions tight on the keystore.
~/.ipfs
Created by ipfs init. System services may set IPFS_PATH elsewhere, so check the unit file before copying.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move a Kubo identity?
Copy config and keystore to the new repo path and keep peer id stable. Blocks refetch from the network. Guard the key files throughout.
Where is the Kubo config file?
config inside the repo folder per OS above. Edit with the daemon stopped or use config commands. Validate JSON after hand edits.
