Where Does LibreTube Store Downloads and Backups?

LibreTube downloads to Android/data/com.github.libretube as split audio and video for in-app play. Back up via JSON export.

Last updated

LibreTube keeps downloads private to itself. Files land in its external sandbox as split streams plus metadata, playable together only inside the app. The folders confuse everyone who browses there expecting MP4s.

Subscriptions and playlists travel separately as JSON backup. That export is the real migration path. Downloads are a cache with delusions of permanence: enjoy offline, re-fetch after moving.

Where LibreTube stores this, by platform

Android
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.github.libretube/files

Split audio, video, subtitles, and metadata for in-app playback. Visible via system Files app, unusable elsewhere. Do not rely on it.

Android
/data/data/com.github.libretube

Private database with history, playlists, and tokens. Needs root. JSON export covers migration without touching it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate LibreTube?

Export backup JSON from settings and import on the new phone. That carries subscriptions, playlists, and history. Downloads stay behind as in-app files.

Why can't other players open LibreTube downloads?

Deliberately. Video and audio save as separate streams meant for in-app playback. Use Seal or yt-dlp for files you want to keep outside the app.

How do I import YouTube subscriptions?

Import a subscriptions.csv from Google Takeout under Backup and restore. Piped-format JSON also imports, carrying playlists along.
