Where Is the LibreWolf Profile Folder?

LibreWolf keeps bookmarks, logins and settings in Firefox-style profile folders. The profile paths for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Last updated

LibreWolf is a Firefox fork, so its data layout will feel familiar: one folder per profile with a random prefix like a1b2c3d4.default, plus a profiles.ini one level up that says which profile loads. Bookmarks, saved logins, extensions and history all live inside the profile folder.

The paths differ from Firefox only in the folder name. Where Firefox uses Firefox, LibreWolf uses LibreWolf or .librewolf, depending on the platform. As with Firefox, the practical way in is about:profiles rather than memorizing any of this. Flatpak installs on Linux keep profiles sandboxed away from the plain path below.

Where LibreWolf stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\LibreWolf\Profiles

profiles.ini and installs.ini sit one level up in %APPDATA%\LibreWolf. Portable builds keep profiles next to the launcher instead, under Profiles\Default. The about:profiles page shows the true path for any install type.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/LibreWolf/Profiles

profiles.ini sits one level up in ~/Library/Application Support/LibreWolf. The Library folder is hidden in Finder, so about:profiles with its Show in Finder button is the sane route. A user.js file in the profile folder applies custom hardening on each launch.

Linux
~/.librewolf

Native packages use this dotfolder directly in home. Flatpak builds sandbox profiles inside their container paths instead, so trust about:profiles over the dotfolder if it looks empty. profiles.ini sits in ~/.librewolf beside the profile folders.

Frequently asked questions

how do i open my librewolf profile folder

Type about:profiles in the address bar. It lists every profile with its full disk path and an Open Folder button, which beats hunting through hidden folders. about:support shows the active profile path too. This works because LibreWolf shares Firefox's profile machinery.

can i move a firefox profile into librewolf

Mostly yes. Copy the profile folder and the profiles.ini beside it, then fix the Path lines if folder names changed. Extensions focused on privacy may behave differently, and versions far apart can upgrade the profile format in ways that do not roll back. Passwords move with the login files in the same folder.

why is my home librewolf folder empty on linux

That is the Flatpak sandbox. The Flatpak build keeps its profile inside its own container directories instead of ~/.librewolf, and the Open Folder button can silently fail. Either grant access with FlatSeal or use the distro's native package, which uses the plain home-directory path.
