Where Is the lsd Config File?

lsd config.yaml location on Linux and Mac, and what belongs in it versus flags.

Last updated

lsd reads an optional config.yaml from an lsd folder under ~/.config. Fresh installs have no file there, and everything from color themes to date formats then falls back to built in defaults. Most daily tuning happens through flags like --tree or --long anyway.

The config file earns its keep for permanent taste: a chosen theme, custom date format, or icon set you never want to retype. Keep it small and version controlled. A twenty line file covering theme and layout beats a dumped copy of every default, which only creates merge noise on updates.

Where lsd stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/lsd/config.yaml

Respects $XDG_CONFIG_HOME when set. YAML syntax, so mind indentation. Themes referenced by name resolve from lsd's built in set unless you point at custom theme files.

macOS
~/.config/lsd/config.yaml

Identical path and behavior to Linux. The same file copies cleanly between the two, since lsd stores no platform specific absolute paths in normal configs.

Frequently asked questions

how do i reset lsd to defaults

Delete config.yaml and relaunch lsd. With no config file present the app uses compiled in defaults, so removal is the whole reset procedure. There is no settings UI to clear.

how do i move lsd settings to a new computer

Copy config.yaml to the same path on the new machine. It holds layout, date format, color theme and icon settings in one portable file with no machine specific paths by default.
