Where Does Messenger Save Photos on Android?
Messenger files photos you explicitly save into a Messenger album under Pictures, separate from its private cache.
Last updated
Messenger keeps two image stores and only one is yours. Everything viewed passes through a private cache that file managers cannot reach. Only photos you explicitly save get copied out to shared storage.
The public copies land in a Messenger folder under Pictures, which gallery apps surface as an album. Facebook's own app uses a DCIM subfolder instead, so the two apps' downloads never mingle. Unsaved chat media stays in the app forever or until cache eviction.

Only explicitly saved photos land here. Viewed but unsaved images stay in the private com.facebook.orca cache that needs root to browse.
Frequently asked questions
I viewed it but it is not in Pictures. Why?
Saving from chat is the trigger. Browsed images stay in the private cache under com.facebook.orca, readable only with root. Tap and hold, save, and the copy lands in Pictures for normal access.
Saved photos do not show in my gallery app. Where?
Newer Android versions bury the path deeper and gallery apps index it slowly. Open Files and navigate to Pictures manually rather than waiting for the album. Media store rescans finish on their own schedule.
