Where Does Minecraft Java Store Mods and Configs?

Where Minecraft Java keeps mods, configs, resource packs and saves.

Last updated

The .minecraft folder is the whole universe: mods for loader jars, config for their options, resourcepacks and shaderpacks for visuals, saves for worlds, plus versions and libraries the launcher manages.

Third party launchers (Prism, ATLauncher, CurseForge) mirror the same tails under per-instance folders. The official launcher uses %APPDATA%\.minecraft on Windows and ~/.minecraft elsewhere. Never mix loader generations in one mods folder.

Where Minecraft Java stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\mods\

Mods, config, resourcepacks, saves and versions under one root. Match loader generation to mod jars. Third party launchers repeat the tail per instance folder.

Linux
~/.minecraft/mods/

Same layout under home on macOS and Linux. Servers use their own folder with mods and config children. Back up mods plus config plus saves as a set.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install a Minecraft Java mod?

Drop the .jar into the mods folder matching your loader (Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt each read their own). Launch the modded profile once so configs generate, then tune them.

What must I back up for a modded instance?

Copy mods plus the config folder and saves together. Configs reference mod ids that only exist with matching mod versions, so mismatched halves crash on boot.
