Where Does the Modrinth App Store Instances?
Where the Modrinth App keeps instances, mods, saves, and Java runtimes on every desktop OS.
Last updated
The Modrinth App keeps everything under one app directory per OS, with a profiles subfolder holding each instance. Instances are self-contained: mods, saves, screenshots, and Java settings travel together.
Since 0.8.0 the folder is named ModrinthApp (older installs used com.modrinth.theseus and migrate automatically). You can change the location in settings, but leave it default unless you have a reason. Admin-gated paths break the launcher.
Where Modrinth App stores this, by platform
%AppData%\ModrinthApp\
Instances under profiles/[instance-name]/ with mods/, saves, and configs inside. Changeable in settings; avoid Program Files. Paste into Win+R to open.
~/Library/Application Support/ModrinthApp/
Same profiles layout as Windows. Open via Finder, Go, Go to Folder since Library is hidden.
~/.local/share/ModrinthApp/
Follows $XDG_DATA_HOME (usually ~/.local/share). Same profiles subfolder layout. Flatpak and distro packages may sandbox this; check app settings for the real path.
Frequently asked questions
How do I confirm my Modrinth App directory?
Open the app settings and look under Resource management for the app directory path. The default is listed here per OS, but a custom path overrides it. Check there before assuming the defaults.
Where are instance saves and mods inside that folder?
Each instance folder holds its own mods, saves, resource packs, and configs. Copy the whole instance folder to back it up. Do not move it into Program Files or another admin-gated location; the app breaks there.
