Where Does Netflix Store Downloads and Profiles?

Netflix keeps profiles and progress on its servers with downloads encrypted in a private sandbox on each device.

Last updated

Netflix profiles are server-side. Watch history, lists, maturity settings, and playback preferences follow the login everywhere. The sandbox holds session plus encrypted downloads for offline viewing.

Downloads carry the usual DRM constraints. They play only inside the app, expire on schedules, and count against per-device limits. Viewing activity syncs regardless of which screen played it.

Where Netflix stores this, by platform

Android
/data/data/com.netflix.mediaclient

Private sandbox for session and DRM downloads. Profiles are account-side. Re-download offline titles per device within plan limits.

iOS
/var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application/<guid>/Documents

Sandboxed container with the same account archive. Downloads expire and play in-app only. Screen recording stays blocked on streams.

Frequently asked questions

How do offline Netflix downloads work?

Use the download button on supported titles and watch from My Downloads. Files stay DRM-locked in the sandbox and expire. Smart Downloads rotates episodes automatically on Wi-Fi.

How do I move Netflix to a new phone?

Log in on the new phone. Profiles, lists, and progress sync from the account. Downloads stay on the old device and need re-fetching within device limits.
