Where Is the Newm Config File?

Newm gesture window manager Python config and debug log on Linux.

Last updated

Newm evaluates one Python file as its config. Bindings, outputs, wallpapers and startup all live there as code. A system copy provides the fallback.

Debug logs land in cache when started with the debug flag. Some variants nest helper configs for foot, mako, waybar and wofi under the same folder. Keep those together during migration.

Where Newm stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/newm/config.py

Python evaluated config for bindings, outputs and startup. System fallback under etc. Debug log in cache with the debug flag. Variants may nest helper configs beneath the same folder.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Newm?

Copy config.py with the session stopped. The debug log is optional bulk. Restoring means putting the file back and starting once to confirm bindings, outputs and wallpapers.

Where do I start customizing?

Copy the default config from the installed package into your config dir and edit the copy. The file is Python, so bindings and outputs are plain dicts and callbacks. System fallback lives under etc.
