Where Does the Nexus Mods App Store Mods?

Nexus Mods App keeps downloads and game backups under a NexusMods.App folder, movable from Settings.

Last updated

The Nexus Mods App stores its working data in OS app-data folders: %LOCALAPPDATA%\NexusMods.App on Windows and ~/.local/state/NexusMods.App on Linux. Downloaded archives sit in DataModel/Archives, logs in Logs. macOS builds are not officially supported, so those two platforms are the whole story.

The library location is the setting that matters. Mods plus full game backups run to tens of gigabytes, so point Storage Location at a roomy drive from the start. The default C: drive path fills fast, and moving later means hand-carrying .nx files.

Where Nexus Mods App stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\NexusMods.App

DataModel/Archives holds downloads and game backups as .nx files; Logs holds diagnostics. Change it via Settings > General > Storage Location.

Linux
~/.local/state/NexusMods.App

Same DataModel/Logs layout. Open with xdg-open file://$HOME/.local/state/NexusMods.App/Logs/ for logs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move my mod library to another drive?

Change Storage Location in Settings > General, move the .nx archive files manually, save, and restart. Version 0.13.4 added the setting; the file move itself is still manual, so do not reopen the app mid-move.

Which file is my backed-up game copy?

Look in the DataModel Archives folder and sort by size. A .nx file matching your game's install size is the full backup. That is the file to keep before experimenting with big collections.
