Where Does nnn Store Plugins and Settings?

nnn has no config file by default and configures through environment variables, with optional plugins in ~/.config/nnn/plugins and bookmarks via NNN_BMS.

Last updated

nnn famously ships without a config file. Everything flows through environment variables read at launch: bookmarks, plugins, trash, colors, archive handling. Your shell rc is the config file in practice.

The one real directory is the plugins folder under ~/.config/nnn, holding executable scripts the NNN_PLUG variable references. Copying your nnn setup to a new machine means copying shell exports plus that folder. Nothing hides in registries or binary caches.

Where nnn stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/nnn/plugins

Optional plugin scripts referenced by NNN_PLUG. Create the folder when adding your first plugin. Shell exports in bashrc or zshrc complete the setup.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add plugins to nnn?

Export NNN_PLUG with semicolon separated key command pairs, and keep scripts in ~/.config/nnn/plugins. The wiki lists maintained plugins to copy from. Plugins run with the current selection as context.

How do I set bookmarks in nnn?

Set NNN_BMS with semicolon separated key path pairs in your shell rc, for example home and downloads shortcuts. nnn reads them every launch with no config file involved. The same pattern covers NNN_TRASH, NNN_ORDER, and other toggles.
