Where Does nomacs Store Settings?

Where nomacs keeps its settings ini on Windows and Linux, and how portable mode changes where it looks instead.

Last updated

nomacs keeps viewer settings in an ini file whose home moves per OS and package. Installed Windows builds use Roaming app data under a two level vendor path. Linux builds use the XDG config home with variant names across versions.

Those Linux variants trip scripted backups that assume one filename. Debian patched builds renamed the file to dodge spaces while other builds kept the original. Portable mode sidesteps everything by reading next to the exe. Panel layouts and recent folders travel in the same ini, so one file roams all.

Where nomacs stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\nomacs\Image Lounge\settings.ini

Installed settings file under the two level vendor path. Portable builds instead read settings.ini beside the exe. Rename to reset.

Linux
~/.config/nomacs/Image Lounge.conf

XDG config home with variant names across versions and packages. Check each sibling when the first is absent. System wide defaults sit under etc xdg.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset nomacs settings without reinstalling?

Close nomacs, then rename the settings file for your OS from this post and restart. The app rebuilds defaults on next launch. Image folders stay untouched since only viewer options reset.

Portable nomacs ignores my user settings file. Why?

Portable builds read settings.ini from beside the exe instead of the user folders in this post. Keep that file with the portable drive to roam settings. Installed builds never look next to the exe.
