Where Does Notesnook Store Notes Locally?
Where Notesnook keeps its encrypted local vault and app config on each desktop OS.
Last updated
Notesnook is an Electron app, so local state follows the platform convention: Roaming AppData on Windows, Application Support on macOS, .config on Linux. Notes stay encrypted at rest inside that tree.
Sync aside, the local folder is the offline truth. Copy it whole for migrations rather than extracting databases. Internal filenames shift between Electron upgrades, so trust the folder, not a specific .db name.
Where Notesnook stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Notesnook\
Encrypted vault plus settings. Internal filenames may vary by Electron version; copy the whole folder with the app closed.
~/Library/Application Support/Notesnook/
Same vault layout. Use Go to Folder in Finder since Library is hidden.
~/.config/Notesnook/
Same layout under the XDG config home. Snap and Flatpak builds sandbox this; check the package data path then.
Frequently asked questions
How do I migrate Notesnook locally?
Copy the app data folder below to the new machine with Notesnook closed, then verify login and sync state on launch. Encrypted notes need your account password regardless of local copies. Exact internal filenames may vary by release.
Notes versus settings: what to copy?
Notes live encrypted in an IndexedDB/SQLite store inside the app data folder, with settings beside them. The folder name follows Electron conventions per OS. Treat the whole folder as the unit; cherry-picking files breaks the store.
