Where Does Heptabase Store Local Data?

Heptabase desktop data folder on each OS, and why the folder is called project-meta instead of Heptabase.

Last updated

Heptabase stores desktop data under a folder named project-meta, which is the internal codename. Search for Heptabase in your file manager and you will miss it. Look for project-meta in the usual per OS app data location instead.

Imported PDFs and images pile up in a hepta-files subfolder. That folder is the one to check first when the app warns about local storage. Do not move it into Dropbox or iCloud yourself. Cloud synced parents cause sync conflicts, so use the built in mover when support enables it.

Where Heptabase stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\project-meta

Paste into Explorer address bar. The hepta-files subfolder holds attachments. Deleting project-meta here resets local state, so export first.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/project-meta

Open with Cmd Shift G in Finder. Same hepta-files layout as Windows. Support docs use this path for manual cleanup of stalled upgrades.

Linux
~/.config/project-meta

Follows XDG conventions. Delete only with the app closed and a backup in place. Restart recreates defaults on next launch.

Frequently asked questions

how do i check which Heptabase folder uses the most disk

Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\project-meta on Windows or ~/Library/Application Support/project-meta on macOS. The hepta-files subfolder holds imported PDFs and images. That subfolder is usually the part eating disk.

can i move Heptabase attachments to another drive

Contact support to enable Change File Storage Location, then go to Settings and Advanced after a restart. Only hepta-files moves. The app install and remaining local data stay on the original drive.
