Where Does the Tana Desktop App Store Local Data?

The Tana desktop app caches UI state and offline data locally, while your notes sync to your Tana account. Local folders are below.

Last updated

Tana's desktop app follows the usual Electron layout: a per-OS data folder with cache, GPU state, Local Storage, and offline copies of your workspace. Your actual notes live in Tana's cloud and sync to every signed-in device, so a second laptop fills itself in.

That makes the local folder disposable but not portable. Copying it between machines rarely works well. Sign in on the new device and let sync do the moving instead, after confirming the latest edits have uploaded.

Where Tana stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Tana

Electron cache, Local Storage, and offline workspace copies. Notes themselves sync from your account, so this folder is safe to clear when the app misbehaves.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Tana

Same role as on Windows. If a Tana folder is missing here, search Application Support for the name, since release builds occasionally rename it.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting Tana local data delete my notes?

No. Deleting the local folder only clears cache and offline copies; your notes sync back down when you sign in again. Still, let a full sync finish first to be safe.

How do I fix a broken Tana desktop install?

Sign out inside the app, quit it fully, then delete the local folder. Fresh sign-in rebuilds it. If the folder name differs slightly by release, search Application Support for Tana.
