Where Does the Notion Desktop App Store Its Data?
Where the Notion desktop app keeps its local cache on Windows and macOS, why deleting it is safe, and how big it usually gets.
Last updated
Notion's servers hold your pages. The desktop app keeps a local mirror so it can open fast and show something while you are offline, and that mirror is all the Notion folder on your disk contains. Delete it and you get a re-download, not data loss.
The folder grows quietly. Images, thumbnails and a copy of every page you have visited pile up over months of use, and a busy workspace can reach a few gigabytes. Clearing it is a normal fix for stale content and sync oddities, and Notion's own support pages describe the same reset.
Where Notion stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Notion
This is the data folder (C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Notion), and the Cache subfolder inside it is what grows. The program itself is elsewhere: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Notion, with the updater in %LOCALAPPDATA%\notion-updater. Some builds also write cached pages to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Notion, so check that one if Roaming looks small. Notion's own reset instructions name the Roaming folder, and Help > Troubleshooting > Reset & Erase All Local Data does the same job from inside the app.
~/Library/Application Support/Notion
This holds the local mirror, including notion.db, and Notion's support pages name it as the folder to delete for a full reset. The image and page cache sits separately at ~/Library/Caches/Notion. Deleting either only forces a fresh download on the next launch, and you will be asked to sign in again.
Frequently asked questions
is it safe to delete notion cache folder
Yes. Your pages live on Notion's servers, so clearing the local folder only makes the desktop app download them again. Expect a slower first launch and a login prompt, then everything is back as it was.
why is notion taking up so much disk space
The cache mirrors every page you have opened, images and thumbnails included, and it never shrinks on its own. A heavy workspace can reach several gigabytes. Right click the folder, choose Properties, and the number is right there.
how do i clear notion cache on windows
Quit Notion from the system tray, press Win+R, type %APPDATA%\Notion and delete the Cache subfolder inside. On a Mac the equivalent is ~/Library/Caches/Notion. Relaunch and let it re-sync before judging whether it helped.
