Where Does Oculante Store Settings?

Oculante keeps its Rust config and cache in the OS data dir on Windows, macOS and Linux. Exact folders here.

Last updated

Oculante follows each OS data convention instead of a single dotfolder. Windows uses Local AppData, macOS uses Application Support, Linux uses the XDG share dir. The split keeps each install native, but it spreads the leaf names across platforms. Recent builds renamed some leaves, so an upgrade can appear to wipe settings that only moved.

Recent versions shuffled the exact leaf name on some platforms. Check both variants listed below before assuming settings are lost. The JSON config is small and safe to copy by hand. Close the app before copying the folder so keybindings, colors and recent files travel together. Cache rebuilds on first launch when skipped, which keeps migration light.

Where Oculante stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\.oculante

Primary data folder. Newer builds may use oculante\config.json instead of .oculante. Check both if settings seem missing after an update.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/oculante

Mac data folder. Preferences and cache sit together here. Copy with the app closed to migrate between Macs.

Linux
~/.local/share/oculante

Linux data folder. Newer releases also try ~/.config/oculante for settings. Check the .config path if this one holds only cache.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate Oculante settings?

Copy the whole data folder with Oculante closed. Keybindings, color settings and recent files travel together. Cache rebuilds on first launch if you skip it.

Why is my Oculante config folder empty after an update?

Newer builds moved Unix settings toward ~/.config/oculante. If the data folder looks empty, check the .config variant before resetting anything. Windows builds had a similar split between .oculante and oculante.
