Where Is the broot Config File?
broot reads conf.toml or conf.hjson from the OS config dir. Run it once and it writes a default config you can edit.
Last updated
broot keeps one main config file, named conf.toml or conf.hjson. The location follows the XDG convention on each system, so it lands in the usual config home rather than next to the binary. Launching broot once writes the default file if none exists.
Verbs, skins, and flags all live in that file. The docs suggest opening it from inside broot rather than memorizing the path. That advice holds across Linux, Mac, and Windows, where the base folder differs. Back up the file to keep your custom commands.
Where broot stores this, by platform
/home/<username>/.config/broot/conf.toml
Main config on Linux under XDG config home. Either extension works, toml is the common one.
/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/org.dystroy.broot/conf.toml
Main config on Mac. The exact folder follows the OS config convention and may differ by install method. Open it from inside broot to confirm.
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\dystroy\broot\config\conf.toml
Main config on Windows. Run broot once to generate it. If the file is not here, open it from inside broot to find the live path.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open my broot config?
Open the help screen with ? and use the open config command. That jumps straight to the live file instead of making you guess the path.
Where do I put custom verbs?
Edit the file broot created and restart. It never overwrites existing files, so your edits survive upgrades.
