Where Does Olvid Store Keys and Chats?
Where Olvid keeps its keys and chats on Android, and why the exported backup file matters more than folders.
Last updated
Olvid keeps keys and chats in private internal storage under its verified Android package name. No phone number or account recovery exists by design, so the device holds the only copies. An in app backup file exports everything to a path you choose.
That export has no fixed location since the system picker asks each time. File managers cannot reach the live store without root. Treat the backup file as the identity itself and guard it accordingly. Group memberships share the backup file, so one export covers every chat.

Private internal storage for keys and chats under the verified package. Needs root to browse. Migrate only through the in app backup export.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move Olvid to a new phone?
Open settings and run the backup export to a file you choose, then move that file off the phone. Keys never leave the device except through this export. Restoring means importing the same file on the new install.
Can I copy Olvid keys with a file manager?
No. Private storage needs root to browse and the package folder shows nothing useful without it. The backup file is the only supported bridge between installs. Keep it somewhere the old phone cannot take with it.
