Where Is the OneDrive Folder on Your Computer?

OneDrive local sync folder defaults on Windows and macOS, how to find a moved location, and which files stay cloud only.

Last updated

OneDrive mirrors cloud files into an ordinary sync folder you choose at setup. Windows defaults to a OneDrive folder in your home directory. Mac defaults beside it under home or the CloudStorage tree for Store builds.

Files On Demand complicates the picture. Cloud only placeholders look present but download on open, which breaks games and signers that need real bytes. Right click the tray icon, open Settings, and read the location row instead of guessing across drives. Personal Vault files stay encrypted locally and never sit fully offline.

Where OneDrive stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\OneDrive

Check the tray icon > Settings > Account to confirm or move it. Use Always keep on this device on folders that games or tools must read as real files.

macOS
~/OneDrive

App Store builds may use ~/Library/CloudStorage/OneDrive-Personal instead. Pick the row shown in OneDrive Settings, since both variants exist in the wild.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my game saves vanish into OneDrive?

OneDrive moves Documents inside itself when backup is enabled, so games follow. Either exclude game folders or keep local copies. Check OneDrive/Documents first when saves look lost.

How do I move the OneDrive folder?

Unlink in Settings, choose the new drive location during setup, and let it resync. Copying the folder by hand without unlinking creates duplicate sync roots.
