Where Are OpenTTD Savegames Stored?

Where OpenTTD keeps savegames, scenarios, NewGRFs, and openttd.cfg on every desktop OS.

Last updated

OpenTTD resolves a personal folder per OS (Documents on Windows and macOS, XDG data dir on Linux) holding saves, scenarios, NewGRFs, and the config. A shared folder and the binary folder act as fallbacks for base sets.

Config placement decides save placement. Modern Linux builds put openttd.cfg under ~/.config/openttd while saves stay under data dirs. When saves seem missing, find the live config first; the save/ folder sits next to whatever config is actually in use.

Where OpenTTD stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\OpenTTD\save

Saves in save/, autosaves in save/autosave, scenarios in scenario/, config openttd.cfg here or beside the binary. Username and Windows version vary the prefix.

macOS
~/Documents/OpenTTD/save

Same save/scenario layout. Config nearby as openttd.cfg. Check the live config path when saves seem missing after moving folders.

Linux
~/.local/share/openttd/save

Saves here on XDG builds (older builds used ~/.openttd/save). Config at ~/.config/openttd/openttd.cfg on new builds. content_download/ holds online content.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move OpenTTD to a new computer?

Copy the whole personal folder (save/, scenario/, content_download/, openttd.cfg) to the matching path on the new machine. Keep base sets (OpenGFX, sounds) too or the game boots without graphics and music.

Saves versus scenarios versus autosaves?

Saves sit in save/ with autosaves in save/autosave, both relative to the active config. Scenarios live in scenario/, downloaded content in content_download/. The config location decides the root, so check which openttd.cfg is live first.
