Where Does Organic Maps Store Bookmarks and Maps?

Organic Maps keeps maps and .kmb bookmarks under Android/data/app.organicmaps. Export bookmarks before reinstalling.

Last updated

Organic Maps stores everything in its app folder: downloaded maps, bookmarks, and settings. That folder vanishes on uninstall, which surprises people who assumed maps would survive like photos. Bookmarks go with it.

The bookmark format is .kmb and exports cleanly from inside the app. Treat that export as your backup, not the folder. Folder copies help for maps but the export is what protects years of saved places.

Where Organic Maps stores this, by platform

Android
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/app.organicmaps/files

Maps as .mwm files, bookmarks as .kmb under Bookmarks. Scoped storage hides it from some managers on Android 13+. Export bookmarks from the app before wiping.

iOS
/var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application/<guid>/ (Organic Maps container)

Per-install container. Bookmarks and maps migrate through in-app export and import, not through typed paths.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Organic Maps bookmarks?

Open bookmarks, share the set, and save the .kmb file. Reinstalls wipe the private folder, so the export is the only copy that survives. Reimport the same file afterwards.

Can I copy downloaded maps to another phone?

Yes. Downloaded .mwm map files live in the same data folder. Copying them between phones on the same version usually works and skips big downloads.
