Where Does oStorybook Store Projects and Backups?

Where oStorybook keeps novel projects, backups and preferences on Windows, Mac and Linux desktop systems.

Last updated

oStorybook is file based. Each book is a single .odb project file you place yourself, usually under Documents. Preferences and recent lists live separately in a small Java config area. The project holds chapters, characters, locations and strands together.

Back up the .odb file, not just the config. The config remembers window layout and last files, but the chapters, characters and strands are inside the project. Keep dated copies of the .odb during drafts. A dated copy has saved more novels than any autosave.

Where oStorybook stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\oStorybook

Project files are user placed .odb files, commonly under Documents. Config holds recent lists only. Back up the .odb itself for real safety.

macOS
~/Documents/oStorybook

Same file based pattern on Mac. Projects sit where you saved them, often Documents. Preferences live in the Java prefs tree beside them.

Linux
~/oStorybook

Same .odb pattern on Linux. Check home Documents first, then File Recent inside the app. Copy the .odb with the program closed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up an oStorybook novel?

Use File Save As for the .odb project file and store that file somewhere safe. Preferences alone do not contain your book. The project file is the whole manuscript plus structure.

I cannot find my oStorybook project. Where do I look?

Check File Recent or your Documents folder first. oStorybook does not force a library location; the project lives exactly where you saved the .odb file.
