Where Does Posteo Store Mail and Data?

Posteo mail lives encrypted on Posteo servers with local copies only in whatever mail client you use.

Last updated

Posteo is a mailbox provider, not an app with local files. Mail, calendars, and contacts live encrypted on Posteo servers, and your devices hold whatever your mail client caches.

That split decides the backup story. The portable copies are IMAP syncs and manual exports from a desktop client, not anything on the phone. Migrate clients freely; the server folders rebuild everywhere. Anything kept only in one client's local folders needs exporting first.

Where Posteo stores this, by platform

Android
Posteo servers (mail); mail-client cache locally

Server-side encrypted mail, calendars, and contacts. Phones hold client cache only. Migrate clients freely; export local-only folders first.

iOS
Posteo servers (mail); mail-client cache locally

Same server-first design. Apple Mail and other clients cache offline copies that rebuild on login. Export local folders before abandoning a client.

Frequently asked questions

Do my emails survive switching mail apps?

The server copy remains the master. Reconnect any IMAP client and folders rebuild; only client-local drafts and unsynced outbox mail can lag behind.
