Where Does Prezto Store Config Files?

Prezto zsh clone dir, runcom symlinks and module config files.

Last updated

Prezto lives in a clone folder with runcom templates inside. Symlinks surface those templates as home dotfiles. All personal state sits in the linked copies.

Module selection happens in zpreztorc. Custom modules layer through a contrib folder plus extra module dirs. XDG users relocate the whole tree under config with ZDOTDIR set.

Where Prezto stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.zpreztorc

Clone dir with runcom templates symlinked as home dotfiles. Module list in .zpreztorc. Custom modules via contrib folder and module dirs. XDG relocation through ZDOTDIR.

macOS
~/.zpreztorc

Same clone and symlink layout with POSIX paths under home or ZDOTDIR.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Prezto?

Copy the dotfiles (.zshrc, .zpreztorc and siblings) plus any contrib folder with no shell running them. The clone dir itself re-clones from upstream. Restoring means putting dotfiles back and relinking runcoms.

How do runcoms install?

Symlink the runcoms from the clone source dir into home or ZDOTDIR. The installer does this once. Module choice lives in .zpreztorc with custom dirs appended through module dirs.
