Where Does Zimfw Store Config Files?

Zimfw zsh manager config, install dir and generated init file.

Last updated

Zimfw splits config from runtime. The rc file declares modules. The installer compiles those into a static init file that the shell actually sources.

Install location defaults under home with package variants in brew and share trees. A config file env var relocates the rc. Modules land in a folder beside init.

Where Zimfw stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.zimrc

Module declarations for the installer, not sourced at startup. Install builds init.zsh from it. Relocatable via config file env var. Install dir defaults under home.

macOS
~/.zimrc

Same rc plus generated init layout with POSIX paths. Package installs vary under brew and share trees.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Zimfw?

Copy .zimrc with no shell running. The generated init rebuilds from it through the install command. Restoring means putting .zimrc back and reinstalling modules.

Is .zimrc sourced at startup?

No. The rc file only declares modules for the installer. The shell sources the generated init instead. Editing .zimrc does nothing until the install step regenerates init.
