Where Does Q-Dir Store Settings?

Q-Dir.ini location for portable and installed use, and how the installer choice decides it.

Last updated

Q-Dir stores settings in Q-Dir.ini, and the file lives in one of two places. Portable copies keep it in the working directory next to the executable, leaving no trace on the host. Installed copies save it under AppData instead. The installer explicitly asks which mode you want.

Power users can go further with Multi INI mode, running several ini files for different layouts. Whatever the mode, the rule is simple: an ini beside the exe wins, and AppData is the fallback. That check resolves every settings hunt in seconds.

Where Q-Dir stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Q-Dir\Q-Dir.ini

File name is Q-Dir.ini with a hyphen. Installed location is typically %APPDATA%\Q-Dir. Copy the file with Q-Dir closed, since the app writes it on exit.

Frequently asked questions

how do i move q-dir settings to a new pc

Copy Q-Dir.ini to the new machine and place it where your install mode expects it: program folder for portable, AppData for installed. Multi INI setups may use several files, so grab them all.

is my q-dir portable or installed

Check for a Q-Dir.ini next to Q-Dir.exe first. When present, the program stores everything there and ignores AppData. No ini beside the exe means an installed setup reading from AppData.
